Near silence is expressed as 0 dB but a sound measured at 10 dB is actually<strong> 10 times louder<\/strong>. If a sound is 20 dB, that&#8217;s 100 times louder than near silence. Here\u2019s some context:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Normal conversation \u2013 60 dB <br \/>\u2022 Heavy city traffic \u2013 85 dB <br \/>\u2022 Lawn mower \u2013 90 dB <br \/>\u2022 Headphones at max volume \u2013 105 dB <br \/>\u2022 Sirens \u2013 120 dB <br \/>\u2022 Concerts \u2013 120 dB <br \/>\u2022 Sporting events \u2013 105 to 130 dB <br \/>\u2022 Fireworks \u2013 140 to 160 dB <br \/>\u2022 Firearms \u2013 150 dB and higher<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I leapt down this rabbit hole after driving an immensely smooth and silent electric car &#8211; I could hear my own breathing. Bear in mind, it was an entry level hatchback. I theorised the road noise, heard from the cabin, might drop further with premium tyres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tyres for this car ranged from 68dB &#8211; 73dB, which led me to think &#8211; why in the world are the 68dB tyres twice as expensive than the 73dB? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s because it\u2019s not the same as turning up the tv volume by 5 increments, from 30 to 35.
