Headlights by In Color

I really liked the lyric, “You know you look so pretty when you say I’m not the one.”

It hit a nerve.

So I’ve had the song on repeat for days now. While cooking. In the shower. On my way to the Asian store for coconut cream. Wiping the dust off my Calathea orbifolia leaves.

Eventually I started making up my own lyrics, just to make the song last a little longer:

You leave your earrings sleeping by my glass,
then tell me not to read too much in that.
You kiss me slow, then slip out of my grasp,
say, “don’t make this more than what we have.”
You know you look so pretty when you say I’m not the one,
I wish I could believe you and be done.

Rain made little galaxies on your coat,
I watched them blur like words I never wrote.
I heard your tires whisper down the lane,
two red lights shrinking in the windowpane.
Your earrings still sit beside my empty glass,
catching headlights every time they pass.
